You Are The God Who Saves Me

A family vacation had brought us to the beautiful Mammoth Mountain area and it was a great day for a hike. We decided to check out Rainbow Falls, an easy short hike from our campground. Unbeknown to us someone had tampered with the signage to the falls taking us in a different direction and we were completely unaware that an aggressive bear had been wandering around the area. What should have been an easy short hike turned into hours and the sun was starting to set. When we came to a fork in the road, we just stood there, my mom’s worried face said it all. We desperately needed to make the right choice.

This childhood memory came to mind recently because I have been memorizing Psalm 25:4-5. When we find ourselves standing at life’s preverbal forks in the road, our heart wants to make the right choice. Our inner struggle is complicated by fear, anxiety and many other emotions. Psalm 25 is a great Psalm to read, memorize and meditate on when we are in those times of decision as it gives helpful guidance how to pray.

The Psalm begins by encouraging us to surrender our life, our future, the consequences, the decisions to God. This seems elementary but we need to want God’s will in our lives and not just our own way. Psalm 25:4 instructs us to pray; Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow.“

When facing decisions, I have found putting away my phone, social media, TV, podcasts and allowing God’s word to fill your mind, soul and spirit is key. I get it, it’s easier to seek out the words of others rather than God’s word but we rob ourselves from a deeper, richer relationship with the Lord, our prayer should be, ”Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.” Psalm 25:5

Now of course it is important to be wise, research, get godly counsel but there is no replacement for humbling ourselves before God and allowing God to show us the right path for He is the God who saves us!!

That day standing at the fork in the road, my mother said a prayer and she felt we should go left which led us to our campsite and thankfully we never encountered the bear!!

Facing life’s forks in the road is part of living and we will all stand in the place of decision many times throughout life. This world seeks to pull our thoughts, mind, soul and emotions in many directions, but God’s word is true and faithful. I hope you will read and reread Psalms 25, meditate on it and allow the truth “You are the God who saves me” to permeate your mind, soul and spirit.

From my heart to yours,
