Communicate Responsibly

Technology has made it easier for us to stay connected and communicate with one another now, more than ever. Cell phones, text messaging, email and Facebook all influence how we communicate. Conversations can happen instantly and practically anywhere.

Fortunately, when, how and with whom we communicate is entirely up to us. We don’t have to engage in shallow conversations on Facebook with people we once knew. We can focus our attention on only those with whom we wish to maintain a relationship. We choose the method and means of communication, and also how we allow it to influence us.

Gone are the days of a face to face conversations and in person friendships. They’ve been replaced by virtual ones, however God’s word still offers guidance on communicating in relationships; in person or virtual.

1 Corinthians 15:33 says, “Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” If we seek to please people more than we desire to obey God, we can be led astray. We have to be careful not to imitate the attitudes and practices of those who don’t know Christ (Ephesians 4:17-20). This applies to virtual communication as much as it does in person communication.

Approach virtual communication with the same level of respect and integrity as you do in person communication. Ask yourself, “Do I represent Jesus when I’m online the same way I do when in person? Just because you can say and do something anonymously doesn’t make it right. It may be time drop some of those Facebook friends who offer only negative influences and worldly convictions versus Godly ones.

Understanding how to text, instant message and Facebook chat is important, especially if you’re trying to connect with the younger generation, or with loved ones who are far away.  Use these wonderful technologies to communicate responsibly. Don’t neglect subtle, worldly influences just because the communication happens fast or is easy to delete (1 Timothy 6:8-10). Pursue righteousness in all the ways you communicate in relationships; especially the virtual ones (2 Timothy 2:22). You never know who’s on Facebook, or following your latest tweet.
