Even the most meticulously planned life can be blindsided by tragedy and the unthinkable happens unexpectedly. Trusting God when tragedy comes, when our plans are destroyed, when our lives are laid bare is a choice. It is in that moment we decide if the Bible is truth and God loves us. Over the years I have seen many people face sickness, death, divorce, betrayal, hardship and loss and turn away from God because in that moment they chose to reject the truth that God’s plans for us are good and they cannot believe God really loves them.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11
I recently heard of a beautiful love story and like most amazing love stories there are twists and turns along the journey. Mr. and Mrs. Kuroki lived a happy life as dairy farmers in rural Japan, raising two lovely children. They had planned to celebrate their upcoming retirement by exploring their beloved country. For years with anticipation and excitement they mapped out their awesome adventure they wanted so much to share together.
But tragedy struck unexpectedly. Mrs. Kuroki had a complication with diabetes and within one week, she lost her sight. Soon, she became depressed and withdrawn, secluding herself in the family home her dreams and plans crushed and destroyed.
Mr. Kuroki heartbroken struggled to find a way to cheer up his beloved wife. When life does not turn out the way we planned, it’s hard to understand when the scripture tells us God has a better way.
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” Isaiah 55:8
Mr. Kuroki had a beautiful idea, he decided to plant a flower garden his wife could enjoy and the fragrance of the flowers would entice her to go outside. Two years of hard work and thousands of flowers later they found a joy that transcended their own lives. You see this private farm now draws people from all over the world and Japan has come to them. Mr. and Mrs. Kuroki’s real life love story has been shared all around the world.
Our lives don’t always make sense but God knows His plans for our lives and they are for good filled with adventure and hope, a brilliant future and joy.
