The Way to Happy

The Road to Happy…

They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.” –Mark 9:33-35

We live in a self-absorbed, self-centered world.  I’m pretty sure this is one reason why there is so much unhappiness in the world. Does it often seem to you that happy people are usually “others-centered” people and that unhappy people tend to be more” I-centered”?

The Bible constantly challenges us to be a servant, to think of others rather than ourselves. Albert Schweitzer was a person who knew a lot about serving. He was a respected missionary doctor in Africa for years. Here’s what he had to say about becoming a servant.

“I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know–the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”

If you’ve been feeling unhappy and unfulfilled lately, perhaps it’s time to take a personal evaluation. Are you” I-centered” or “others-centered”?

Your decision will affect not only your destiny but also the quality of your life. The road to happiness is the road of service.

Find a place to serve! It could be in the food bank, at Single Mom’s Spa Day, in Children’s ministry, opening up your home for a small group, etc. The list goes on and on.   God wants to use your talents to make a difference in the lives of others and a fantastic bi-product is that it will make you happier!

Blessings,

Thora

  1. Thank you for your perspective on service. As a care giver I have learned that difference between doing a chore for myself or for the person I’m caring about. The choice is often day by day or adult diaper by diaper. My focus on who I’m really touching and working with has to be about the Lord Jesus.lf I lose my attention that makes me feel stressed and creates tension in my body. I have to move from myself and I towards yourself and you. Some times it is not service but grace that allows me to do my job for the benefit of giving Jesus a way into the situation.
With the forgiveness and grace from the mercy God has shown me I take care of my 85yr old mother.
