In Arizona, we have something called “monsoon season”. The rain and the storms are beautiful but so powerful.
Last night, the rain was heavy, the thunder was long, but that wind… that wind was some of the strongest we’ve had in a while.
As I laid in bed listening to the storm, I couldn’t help but think how afraid I was for that wind to blow over my tree or that we’d wake up to a missing trampoline… I prayed for peace within my own heart because the panic attack I was having was too much.
Then, the Lord reminded me of something.
“The rain is providing water for growth. It is needed in the desert. It brings life to those who need it and it’s beautiful to listen to.
The wind is deepening the roots. The trees roots will grow stronger and deeper the more it faces challenges. That tree has been here since before we moved in and it will be here after we leave. It is strong and healthy.
There is nothing I can do about the trampoline. It’s too late to strap it down and it’s just a material item, here today and gone tomorrow. Instead of worry, I need to trust in the one who will protect us in any storm.”
Wow! He is always teaching if we take the time to listen.
When a storm comes, it’s easy to worry or be afraid but there is such Beauty that comes from a storm. It uproots the dead and strengthens the thriving. It exposes the unhealthy roots of something that may not have been as sound as it had seemed. It provides water for the thirsty. It teaches us to trust Him.
As I struggled to fall back asleep, I was reminded of Jesus sleeping in the boat (Matthew 8:23-27). When you are filled with the spirit, there is no need to fear.
We need to fix our eyes on the one who calms the storm and listen when He is ready to teach us. The Lord is with us in any storm that comes our way. There is no need to worry.
