Webster’s dictionary defines mothering as “nurturing with care and affection.” Mothering doesn’t just occur between a mother and child. While that is the place that mothering begins, it is by no means the place where mothering ends.
It is from our mothers that we can learn how to practice loving unconditionally; they serve as role models, demonstrating how to care for others and they help to nurture our spiritual growth. A mother’s love has the capacity to stay with us throughout the rest of our lives in a myriad relationships.
The mothering we receive comes from many women in our lives; our sisters, grandmothers, aunts, our close friends, even people who we may have known for only a short period of time, but who left a huge imprint on our hearts. People of faith, who encouraged us to trust Jesus and to open our hearts a little bit wider to give and receive love more fully.
Mothering is important business, and Mother’s Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate our mothers and all those who have mothered us. Women of excellence, whose worth far exceeds that of rubies and expensive jewelry.
