I recently heard a story that just made me smile. A mom and daughter had gone shopping and when they went to exit the store, they saw a crowd of people. They quickly realized what was happening, there was a huge storm and the rain was coming down by the buckets. After standing in the crowd for a few minutes, the mother leaned down and whispered to her daughter, “Do we stay here or do we get wet?” The daughter looked up at her mom with a twinkle in her eye, a big smile and said, “Let’s get wet!” The duo made their way through the crowd and ran to their car! They jiggled and screamed all the way. Once in the car, the mother looked at her daughter who was beaming with pride and said, “Mommy we got wet!”
How many times in our lives when we have been ready to break free, step out, open up, say yes to new opportunities and possibilities we are only confronted by the proverbial storm! The storm can represent many things like fear of moving forward, shame from our past, guilt for not doing enough, unforgiveness of ourselves or others. However the storm can also disguise itself with practicality, legalism and plain old laziness, they too can also keep us from where God is taking us!
As I thought more and more about this story, I questioned how many times have the storms kept me from the blessing? How many times have I played it safe? How many times have I stood with the crowd rather than take the adventure? The answer, too many times!
I have decided I want to get wet! Run in the rain! Laugh more in the struggle and changes of life! Will you join me? I am sure we will be happy we did.
“For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. They will spring up like grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams.” Isaiah 44:3-4
