Love your Neighbor as Yourself

Philipians 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.  NIV

One of the things I love about Jesus is His humility and love of all people—to the point of dying for them.

Something I have become more and more concerned about in America is the attitude of, “Me first.”  Or, ”America first.”  I simply cannot imagine the Jesus I know saying, “Jerusalem first.”  As a Christ follower, our total allegiance is to be to Jesus. (and to try to live the way Jesus lived)

Jesus showed incredible concern for widows, orphans and immigrants.  (In other words, He was in no way saying, “Israelites first!”)

Deut. 10:18-19 says, “He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. 19 And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.”   In the Bible, I never heard Jesus say anything sounding like we should look out for ourselves or the Jewish nation first.

I think the attitude of Jesus can be summed up in Mark 12:30-31

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Something to think about.

Blessings,

Thora
