“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18 (NIV)
When I was working, at the start of every morning, I would write down three things I was grateful for. It was a habit I enjoyed doing. It made me smile and got my day started on the right foot.
Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians that this is what we should do.
When I got sent home due to the stay-at-home order, I stopped my gratitude habit. And I’ve noticed sadness and loneliness have become stronger forces in my life than thankfulness.
My circumstances changed, like all of ours did when the pandemic hit our country, and instead of continuing to rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks, I cried a lot and pondered a million “what-ifs” that I had no control over.
Recently, at my small group, we discussed complaining and how we can let it get out of hand.
Certainly, there are times when complaining is warranted. But in all circumstances, like Paul says, there is always something to be thankful for.
Are you letting your current circumstances change you? It’s easy to get caught up in feelings of bitterness, fear, self-pity. When we make gratitude a daily habit, we are reminded every day that God is present and so are His blessings.
If you’ve been feeling not quite like your usual self, pause and write down 3 things you are grateful for today. Then try it again the next day.
Three Things I’m Grateful For Today (May 25, 2020):
- That I get to write another blog post for Vineyard Women’s Ministry Blog.
- Getting to sleep in.
- For the men and women who bravely fought and sacrificed all for my continued freedom.
Rejoice Always. Pray Continually. Give Thanks.
