A Generational Testimony

On July 5th, I set out on an adventure with just my daughter and myself. We got in our car and headed east to my home state of Indiana.  It was the first time that I had made the trip since I moved to Phoenix in June of 2004.  It was an amazing journey.  As I traveled the highways and byways of our country, I was amazed at God’s handiwork, I was reminded of Psalm 19: “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above[a] proclaims his handiwork. 2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.” One of the best moments on my trip was when I was able to attend church with my mom and grandparents.  My grandpa just turned 90 and my grandma turns 95 in October.  As I stood for worship and sang beautiful praises to our God, My heart was full.  It was also a reflective time as well.  As I stood holding my grandmother’s hand, tears filled my eyes, because I was reminded of her faithfulness to be a witness for her family.  It was at her apartment that I knelt on the floor and said a prayer to accept Jesus into my heart.  My life as never been the same, and my future is eternally secure.  I realized in that moment that I want to be that for my daughter and my future grandchildren, and for people I have never met, and may never meet.  As I stood in that church, I realized why she had such a profound impact on my spiritual life; it was her commitment to God through all seasons of life. I saw her live out her relationship with God in the good times and through the storms of life.  Jesus was the cornerstone in her life, and because of that, my life was changed.  Now I am home, and  I am  moving  forward with my life in Arizona,  and I am convicted by the fact  that I have a legacy to live out.  I am an heir to God’s throne, and my life is a testimony for this present generation, and the ones to come in the future.  Because of my faith, many could come to know the Savior.  I am reminded of this verse from Psalm 119:111 “Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart.” My grandma’s committed Christian life was a testimony to the saving Grace of Christ.    God’s testimony is revealed in the everyday lives of his people.  His Word in action.  Because of the testimony of a faithful follower, I have been able to be filled with a joy in my heart that never waivers.  I pray as you live out each day God has for you that you realize the potential that is there, not only for this present generation, but for the generations to come.  Who knows how many future people will come to know the saving grace of God through your life that displays the power of God in it.

Be Blessed,

  1. What a nice picture! I am thankful for my Mom who started the “generations of faithfulness” in my family. I saw her be faithful in church year after year, attending alone, because my father did not attend. So thankful for her example.

  2. Thank you for your timely words Jessica. I recently found out that I’m going to be a grandmother and had just asked myself “what am I supposed to be doing?” and wondering how my role will change. Duh.

  3. Your grandma “robbed the cradle” ha! What a blessing to be attending a church service w/generations! Thank you for the good reminders of our witness & testimony to family and others. God bless your faithful grandma.
