“All About That Bass”

Cheryl Kephart, a worship leader at our church, is guest blogging today.

“All About that Bass”

You know the song. You like the beat. You turn it up loud when you’re in your car alone.

Admit it.

Okay, so maybe it’s just me?

When you find your foot tapping and your body voluntarily responding to something that is admittedly secular consider this…

Maybe anything and everything that is created or creative can give glory to God regardless of intention and audience.

We have the privilege to co-create with God. Being in relationship with Him is not a prerequisite for this.
He gives gifts and talents to all of us. Everyone. No matter how and where we use these.

“And the gifts and call of God are irrevocable.”
Romans 11:29.

Anything that moves us in our spirit and soul is worth appreciating. Especially if it makes us smile or laugh.

Just because it is not specifically for the body of Christ doesn’t mean it is from or for the enemy.

Satan is not a creator. He never has been. To put him at the same level as God regarding inspiration is a mistake.

Satan is simply a fallen angel. A created being. He is at a level with other angelic beings such as Michael or Gabriel.

So, the next time you hear a song or see something artistic that makes you go “hmmm?”

Celebrate the fact that God has a sense of humor. We should too!

  1. Cheryl,

I’m sorry but are you kidding me??? Have you ever heard the lyrics to this song. This is a very disturbing post. This song is not innocent it degrades women and their value and is disrespectful. Sure the hook sounds quote on quote fun. But anyone can see past the fun into the intentions behind it. The bass as a reference to a womans back side. All you have to do is read the rest of the lyrics to see that. There is nothing inncoent about lyrics like that. We were created to worship God! Satan yes was a fallen angel but do you know what his position in heaven was? To lead worship to God. He fell because he wanted to be worshiped in the same way. One of the most powerful tools he uses in the world is to manipulate and influence musicians to write music that leads people away to other idols in their life. Like sex and drugs and money. And one the the things the devil hates more than anything is women because of his curse that eves offspring would trample the serpents head. Not to mention we were kind of like the icing on the cake to Gods creation. When God created he said it was good it was not until he created woman that he said it was very good. Satan uses music to degrade women down to a peace of meat. I am sorry of this is harsh but I am blown away by this post. Here is the entire lyrics…

Because you know I’m all about that bass,
    ‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all ’bout that bass, ’bout that bass, no treble
I’m all ’bout that bass, ’bout that bass, no treble
I’m all ’bout that bass, ’bout that bass
Yeah it’s pretty clear, I ain’t no size two
But I can shake it, shake it like I’m supposed to do
‘Cause I got that boom boom that all the boys chase
All the right junk in all the right places
I see the magazines working that Photoshop
We know that shit ain’t real
Come on now, make it stop
If you got beauty beauty just raise ’em up
‘Cause every inch of you is perfect
From the bottom to the top
Yeah, my momma she told me don’t worry about your size
She says, boys they like a little more booty to hold at night
You know I won’t be no stick-figure, silicone Barbie doll,
    So, if that’s what’s you’re into
Then go ahead and move along
Because you know I’m all about that bass,
    ‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all ’bout that bass, ’bout that bass, no treble
I’m all ’bout that bass, ’bout that bass, no treble
I’m all ’bout that bass, ’bout that bass

  3. Congratulations Cheryl! I applaud & admire your courage to share your thoughts. I know that this will reach many & will even inspire others to do the same. I miss you as well. Love you!

  4. Hi Crystal. It was not my intention to promote anything that degrades women. I simply don’t see that in the song. My perspective is from the overall message lyrically of women accepting themselves as they are. God can use creativity that is secular for a good and positive message.

  5. Cheryl, thank you for your post. I agree that music of all kinds can have a positive or negative effect. I tap my foot to Meghan Trainer and man do I shake when I hear Taylor Swift. I am a mother of 5, 4 of which are daughters and they will hear the music and I encourage them to dance. I will have discussions with them because it is my job as their mom to do so, and be sure that they know they are so much more than a booty or a size 2. And I will dance around with them and sing along and probably thank God for the memory of it afterward. Keep dancing and for sure keep writing!

  6. Chery, I didn’t write my comment to discourage you from writing. it was aggressive and Attacking in nature and I apologize for that. I guess I just feel differently when it comes to music. It is a very powerful weapon that we use for Gods kingdom and victory in our own lives. my personal experiences have made me feel so strongly about the kind of music that I listen to. After reading this post I watched the music video and I still feel the same. In some parts it seems harmless and than you see torking and a girl wrapped in sulofan wrap with a lot of skin showing. Some music has very obvious jabs and influences of provocative scenes while others are more subtle. But again in my opinion those subtle gestures can infiltrate and have even more impaxt We are all entitled to our opinions and of course we each have the Holy Spirit convicting us of what is okay for each one of our lives. I believe one of the most impactful things in our lives is music and that is from my own experience. In the past I did listen to secular music until the Lord gently steered me away from it. He showed me how many lies were taught through music and he wanted to free me from them. I know your blog was a more general post but I felt compelled to give my opinion because of the song you chose to use as an example. Again i am sorry if my comment came across as an attack that was not my intention. God bless you.

    My thoughts exactly!

We can still appreciate the different gifts people have even when they are not Christian.

I actually really appreciate her sass and boldness in that song. I also whatched her sing with jimmy Fallon and the roots with childrens instruments and she was spot on.

    Thanks so much for sharing!
