Escalators and Love Notes

My four year old son LOVES escalators.  He watches videos of them on youtube and can recognize the brand names Schindler and Montgomery.  One of his favorite things to do is to go to the mall – just to ride the escalators!  My husband takes him every once in awhile and one day recently they went into Dillard’s.

When they got to the escalator in Dillard’s, they found an interesting situation.  One of the employees had been going down the escalator and was holding a tray of necklaces.  Unfortunately for her, she dropped the tray and the necklaces went down into the cracks and jammed the escalator, so it wasn’t working.

While my husband and son were there, they got to see the escalator repairman come and fix the problem.  He took off the covering on the steps, retrieved the necklaces and then put everything back together.  As my son watched in fascinated delight, he got to see the repairman use a special key to turn the escalator back on.

When they returned home, I listened intently to their exciting story.  My son also reenacted for me how the repairman used the key to turn the escalator back on.  It was so sweet to see how that one incident was such a bright spot in my son’s day.

Then I realized as I thought about it…this was a love note from God to my son!  I am in my thirties and have never seen anything like that happen.  So, for the timing to be perfect and for them to be there right when that happened, I knew it was no coincidence.  It warmed my heart as I thought about that…how God loves us so much that he sends us little love notes like that in forms of things that bring us joy.  I tend to catch my own from time to time, but had never talked to my son about them.  I told my son as well, so that he would become aware of things like that too.

It also got me thinking about that poor employee…she was upset about the situation and will probably never know how the resolution to the problem she caused brought so much joy to my son.  I hope that encourages me to focus on the positive when things don’t go my way.  God could very well use one of my mistakes to somehow help or bring joy to someone else.

To quote Veggie Tales: “God made you special and he loves you very much!”  Be sure to watch for God’s special love notes to you.

  1. So sweet!!! Yes, we need to keep our eyes open to God’s love notes. Many times for me, they come in the form of pennies. Yes, coins! For more details, watch for a future blogpost! 🙂

  2. Your article made me smile. While I was hiking this afternoon I saw a little ground squirrel. (I really like squirrels!). And after I saw him I thought that it was a love note from God. 🙂
