By the time this blog is posted – the election will be over. Can I get a BIG AMEN! When I composed these words and scheduled them to post, it was a full two weeks before the election. The outcome was a mystery with no idea of the winner.
While many people may be fearful or unhappy with the results of the election – I know for a fact it won’t change MY reality. JESUS IS LORD. Regardless of the election outcome, I know that whoever ends up in the White House will not destroy my hope. I will continue to put my trust in the King of Kings and not the government or the person who holds the presidential title.
Over the last six months, politics and social media have shown us just how ugly people can behave. Division over platforms, issues, candidates and party lines have separated many a friend and families alike.
In my own family – heated, hurtful words have been exchanged. Battle lines have been drawn. I’ve not been totally innocent and confess I’ve let a certain amount of ugliness spew from my very opinionated mouth.
BUT the election is over. Life goes on. How can we move past our differences? How can we save our friendships and restore relationships that may have been divided because of a political race?
Just as a bullet fired from a gun cannot be shoved back in the chamber – we cannot retrieve hurtful words once they are spoken. At some point, we must decide: Am I going to be the bigger person and apologize for any hurtful words on my part? OR Will I wait for the other person to approach me? Will I gloat and be a smug I-told-you-so person if my candidate wins? OR Will I be a gracious loser and accept the results?
I don’t want to be the person who spends the next four years lamenting “he is not MY president. I didn’t vote for him!” Nor do I want to be the person who spends four years as an obnoxious victor.
In the end – it should not matter WHO wins. As Americans, we are supposed to be on the same team? You know – One Nation under God and all that.
The Bible doesn’t tell us we are to love only those that agree with us. If we choose to remain divisive with our friends and family long after the election, then the only team that wins, is team Satan. If we cannot reconcile our political differences, the enemy has performed his job well and we as the body of Christ have failed miserably.
Win or lose, as believers our mandate according to 1 Timothy 2:1-3 is clear:
The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know. Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble contemplation. This is the way our Savior God wants us to live. (The Message Bible)
God bless America and whoever sits in the White House!
Blessings in Christ, Kathy K.
Thanks Kathy. I’ll be so glad when our country can move forward, but I know God is not surprised.
“Just as a bullet fired from a gun cannot be shoved back in the chamber – we cannot retrieve hurtful words once they are spoken.” Loved this portion, especially, Miss Kathy. The truth is that God is ultimately who puts people in positions of authority and our duty is to pray for our leaders — whether we like them or not, as you so eloquently said it.
This a wonderful post
Great reminders. Love our brothers and sisters in Christ no matter who they support politically. God is King – always and forever!
