Attachments

“Praying that you might see yourself as God sees you takes courage. But if done with the deep assurance that the self you seek to know is already known and deeply loved by God, it is absolutely possible. And remember, it is in the depths of yourself that God waits to meet you with transforming love.“

“… attachments are a way of coping with the feelings of vulnerability, shame, and in adequacy that lie at the core of our false ways of being.“

“ God wants us to be aware of our helplessness so we can know that we need divine help.”

In 2019 the Lord began unveiling to me some of the more hidden insecurities I have. It’s been a year of reflection in a deep sense. The most frustrating thing I grapple with now is my sense of awareness. Because I am now aware of some of my deep fears and insecurities I expect myself to change, right now.

I just finished reading a book called “The Gift of Being Yourself “. In it David Benner talks about how we will form “attachments“ to help us maintain a “false self”. The false self is basically a mask we wear to hide our insecurities and fears. We form “attachments“ or habits to support those false identities.

Benner says that we “think of our attachments as anchors of well-being… [that] secure a state of pleasure that would not be ours without them…“ when in reality they make “our contentment and joy dependent on their presence.“

I realize that I use attachments to cope with my vulnerability and shame and what that’s doing ultimately is masking my helplessness and keeping me from feeling that uncomfortability when in reality if I were to allow myself to feel it I would be more aware of the divine presence of God in my life, because I would have to depend on Him more.

“Come to me all you who are weary and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
