Lamenting is not a fun thing to do. How I have cried out to the Lord for answers to my why questions! I have poured out an anxious soul, with the hope that the pain would subside and the answers would come. But the comfort God gives doesn’t answer many tough questions.
As a group leader in our Griefshare program, I have learned that lamenting is good, but demanding that God give answers for tragedy is actually prideful. Hmm, when I cannot receive God’s healing for the pain of loss without knowing all the details, that’s pride in action. I honestly want to know why things happen the way they do, but the God I serve is above my own comprehension.
“The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.” Deuteronomy 29:29
There’s a difference in simply asking questions and demanding answers. God does invite us to ask Him questions. He welcomes us to share what’s on our hearts with Him, yet not demand that He explain it all since we could never comprehend His ways. God is beyond our understanding.
Recently, my family has put two of our pets to sleep. It was so hard on us. Since we have also lost a daddy, husband and grandpa over the last 6 years, there is a very tender place in our hearts that still needs healing.
While we grieve, we learn to take our questions to the Lord along with our broken hearts. The pain is a good reminder of how much we have loved both people and pets alike. Whenever we love deeply, we hurt deeply at the loss. One must walk through the lament to find the healing which is waiting for them on the other side.
If you have recently experienced the loss of a loved one, go to God with your questions and your sorrow. The lamenting really is necessary, no matter how much pain it seems to reveal. Our loving Father wants to comfort you and heal you. He may not answer all your questions, but He will comfort you. Jesus said this himself.
”Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” MAT 5:4
