It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going. –Hebrews 11:8 (NLT)
There have been times when I have been driving and not known where I was going. However, I wasn’t doing this willingly. I knew the ultimate destination, but I do not have a good sense of direction.
As I reflect on it, the idea of knowing where I’m headed, but not exactly where I’m going, does remind me a bit of the journey of the Christ-follower.
When we respond to Christ by faith, we begin a lifelong journey. We are called to follow Him. But, life’s circumstances and experiences are always changing and detours along the way are a routine occurrence. We have to make big choices to trust, even when we can’t clearly see where we’re going or understand why some things happen. Faith makes this journey both possible and worthwhile.
Abraham’s life story, found in the Old Testament book of Genesis, is comforting to me because he modeled this journey of faith. God called Abraham to leave his home and everything familiar to go to a land and people he did not know. He knew where he was headed, even though he didn’t know exactly where he was going. Abraham’s life was a journey filled with ups and downs, wise and unwise decisions, victories and failures. However, in the end, the Scripture says, “Abraham believed God, so God declared him to be righteous.”
You may feel that you are wandering. You might not have any idea where you are going in life. Drive a stake in the ground to be obedient. Keep following Christ. Take comfort in the fact that God holds both you and your future. In His hands, you are safe, because He does have the directions and He knows the end of the story.
Blessings,
Thora
I really needed this today. Thank you Thora.
This was a perfect reminder for me. I sometimes feel God may be leading me to evangelism but I quickly panic when that thought comes. I say things like “it can’t be, I’m under qualified. What if I lead a person to Christ and they start asking me questions I can’t answer!” It goes on and on. I have to remember God has the directions and knows the end. Maybe this thought is the first location he has provided for me on his map.
Thanks for this Thora. I’ve never looked at our Christian journey quite this way. I like your driving analogy!
Love the imagery of driving a stake into the ground!
God always reassures us in His words! Thank you for this story.
