It’s easy to recall with vivid clarity where I was, what I was doing – even what I was wearing on that day. It seems like just yesterday rather than 14 years ago that the entire world changed as the result of a horrific terrorist attack on the World Trade Center Twin Towers.
Just prior to the attacks I’d been nursing an irritation over some minor infraction my husband had committed. All was quickly forgotten though as lives were shattered and thousands of people lost their lives that day, not just in New York City, but also at the Pentagon and in a field in Pennsylvania.
For days following the attacks my husband would come home and find me huddled in front of the television reduced to sobbing and tears as I watched story after story of loss unfold. Finally nearly two weeks after 9/11 my husband said it was time to turn the TV off. I needed to move on and stop dwelling on so much loss.
As a nation we did move on. Churches that were packed to overflowing just following the attacks again found their numbers dwindling. People who cried out to God and sought refuge in the church were once again putting God back on the shelf in a tidy little box.
Sadly so many only seek solace in the Savior when there is a crisis or national tragedy. But God will not be put in a box or tucked away. Jesus is not meant to be dusted off like some genie in a lamp whenever we have a demand, a request or a dream that needs fulfilling.
JESUS IS LORD OVER ALL.
The Bible warns us that in the last days: And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately. Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. But all this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come. (Matthew 24:6-8 NLT)
It’s evident the moral decline of our nation and our world has escalated since the 9/11 attacks. If we are, in fact, living in the end days and 9/11 was simply a birth pain now is certainly not the time to put Jesus on the shelf. More tragedy WILL follow.
May this day forever be a reminder that we need a Savior now more than ever. We need Jesus yesterday, today and forever.
Blessings in Christ,
Kathy K.
Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 1 Peter 3:3 (NLT)
Amen!
This so reminds me how attendance went up…for a few weeks… after 9/11.
Yikes. I think this is indicative of our American culture.
Thank you for the memorial of the day. Jesus is always a good place to run to–good days & bad.
