Becoming Myself

Soren Kierkegaard said, “Now with God’s help, I will become myself.”  That means I become who God intended me to be—not who the world “squishes” me to be.

The measure of a woman’s value does not depend on how much she has accomplished in life, how much she weighs, what she looks like or even what others perceive to be her level of spirituality.  Determining self-worth is discovering the value of who God created you to be.  It is to acknowledge that your worth is based on God’s love, grace and perfect design.

I can become very disappointed with myself—my weight, my looks, my wrinkles becoming more pronounced,(the hair growing out of the mole under my nose), my lack of computer knowledge, I worry too much what other people think, I should be a better wife, mother, daughter sister, friend, etc. and the  list goes on.

However, if we reject our design, we will not have trust in our Designer—God.  Wrong attitudes will affect every relationship in our lives.  The truth is we are made in God’s image.

To really grow spiritually, means we live increasingly as Jesus would in our unique place—if Jesus lived in our body. (How would Jesus respond to my Mother-in-law? Would Jesus yell at my kids? Would He pout about what his co-worker did?)

Hopefully we mature as we get older.  I once received a charm from my Mother for my bracelet inscribed with Latin words meaning, “more than yesterday, less than tomorrow.”

Am I more than yesterday and less than tomorrow on the journey to become myself?  To become who God sees me to be?

Am I morphing to become more like Jesus.?

Mark 12:28-31 One of the teachers of religious law …asked, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”  Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: “Hear O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord.  And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul,  all your mind, and all your strength.  The second is equally important:  ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  No other commandment is greater than these.”

More than yesterday; Less than tomorrow.

Blessings,

  1. What an amazing post, Thora! Now, I couldn’t help thinking that I weigh more than yesterday and probably less than tomorrow! LOL

  2. Great blog, Thora! I can certainly related to thoughts of “I should be doing x y and z better…” Thanks for the encouragement!
