We were made to think about something bigger, better, richer than ourselves.
Dallas Willard, a favorite author if mine, said, “We were made to have a mind enthralled with God – – a mind that is thinking wonderful, hope-filled, lovely thoughts about God.”
That’s how we were made!
So, how do I do that? How do we love God more? How do we think more about God?
You’ve probably heard the phrase, “You need to stop and smell the roses.” The idea behind that is that a “rose” is a lovely thing. But – – to enjoy it – – I have to focus on it! So, I need to bring the “rose” before my senses.
I need to look at it. I need to smell it.
And when I do, I delight in it. That’s the nature of a rose.I bring my mind before it, and I stop and smell the rose. And when I do, it produces delight. That’s the way the mind works. When there’s something lovely – – and I bring that thing before my mind – – it produces delight.
That is what worshipping God does!
When you bring God to your mind, it produces delight. That’s one of the ways you grow in love for God.
And, to get my mind to focus on God, I can use any means I want to.
The Bible talks a lot about people using creation to bring their mind to think about God and His Goodness. I can look at a sunset, or smell a rose, or look at the ocean, and I’m thinking about the goodness and wonder of God. I can listen to the laughter of children, and stop and think, “Who thought that up? Why should there be such goodness and beauty in the world?”
It’s only because of the love and beauty of the One Who created it all!
