The daughter of a friend of mine, Lacey, spent a few years working at a Taco Bell restaurant. She worked her way through the ranks until she eventually became a manager. During her tenure in restaurant management, young Lacey had a new hire employee whose name was Jesus – spelled like Jesus, as in Christ, but pronounced like Hey-Soos, which is a popular Hispanic name.
Lacey was born and raised as a Christian and lived many of her early formative years in Alaska. Lacey wasn’t aware that there was a southwestern pronunciation for this name and couldn’t fathom why any mother would name their child after the Son of God. Whenever Lacey worked with this young man, she quite naturally called him Jesus (as in Christ) since that was the only way she’d ever seen or heard this name pronounced.
As a manager, Lacey was in a position to delegate work assignments. Anyone who has ever worked at a fast-food restaurant knows just how crazy busy things can be during a lunch or dinner rush. During these busy shifts, she was often heard shouting orders like, “Jesus, I need you on the drive-through register!” or, “Jesus, come and help me at the front counter!” When things were just plain chaotic and out of control, Lacey could be heard simply yelling, “Jesus, I need your help … now!”
While Lacey’s fellow employees and customers always found her managerial orders and mispronunciation of this young man’s name quite funny, I can’t help but think Lacey may have inadvertently stumbled onto the secret of life’success. How many times a day do most of us encounter situations that require a little divine intervention, yet we don’t bother to ask for help. Imagine how much smoother a problem could be worked out if we only took a minute to simply say, “Jesus, I need your help … NOW!”
The New Testament gives us many Scriptures reminding us that Jesus is ready and willing to help us if we simply call on Him.
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10:13)
They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” (Acts 16:31).
There are many great Scriptures we can (and most definitely should) memorize and bury down in our souls for those times when we don’t know what to pray … we just know we need the Lord’s help.
Do you need encouragement? Help on your job or with your relationships? Help raising your kids or making ends meet to pay your bills? Whatever your need, with just a couple of quick words to Jesus … your help is on the way!
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD. (Psalm 121:1-2)
Blessings in Christ,
Kathy K.
Funny…and so true!
Thanks Kathy for the gentle reminder that Jesus is always there for us but we need to call upon His Name. I love the practical story of the restaurant and calling on Jesus in the midst of chaos instead of going it alone.
Thx for the laugh, I think Lacey is on to something BIG.
Loving this chuckle today, great visual and oh so true in times of chaos to ‘simply’ call out. =)
I was cracking up from the moment I read the title of this hilarious, wonderful post!
