This summer, my husband Mario, our eldest daughter Lindsay and I accompanied our youngest daughter Grace on her maiden journey of buying a new car. It was a great experience! We laughed a lot during the process of choosing the perfect vehicle. We went to lots of dealerships where we test drove lots of cars and talked with lots of salesmen! Our family had a lot of opinions and a lot of questions, but in the end it was Grace who had to choose the car that was best for her. By the way she choose well!
Recently I was reminded of this car buying experience while reading a devotional on the gift of choice. So many choices were available to Grace but she held the power to choose. Just like purchasing the right car came down to a choice so it is with our decision to follow Jesus Christ.
Choice is defined by Merrian-Webster dictionary as; “The act of picking between two or more possibilities; 2. : the power of choosing“
It is a perplexing concept to consider the God who knows us best, loves us the most, sees us completely and created us intimately gives us the power to chose to love Him. God has placed within humanity the mighty gift of choice even at the risk of rejection or the possibility of loss. The scripture says,
“To choose life is to love the Lord your God, obey him, and stay close to Him.”
Deuteronomy 30:20
The God who has chosen to love us unconditionally regardless of our choice waits patiently for us to choose Him in all things. It is not just about salvation, it is about the choices we make daily. To choose to follow His word, to choose to trust His ways, to choose to acknowledge His Lordship in our lives. He has chosen us and now it is our choice and what will we choose the next time we are faced with temptation, with fear, with jealousy, with pride, with unforgiveness? The good news is that our God who has given us this gift of choice has also given us power to overcome, to stand firm and to choose life.
“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life!”
Deuteronomy 30:19
