Sometimes it’s very easy to convey a powerful message in as few words as possible. A couple of weeks ago there was an article that circulated on Facebook simply titled, “Marriage is not for me,” written by a man who’d only been married just over a year. Simply reading the title of the article was enough to stir judgmental emotions – mine included – prompting me to read further.
It turns out the title and the actual content of the article were much different than what readers expected. The writer confessed that he’d been having trouble adapting to the amount of sacrifice required of marriage. He counseled with his father who imparted sage wisdom to him enlightening him to the reality that when we marry, we do so not to please ourselves but to please our partner. Hence, the title of the article was a pivotal statement when the young man concluded that “marriage wasn’t for him.” It was a well written article. Moses, the writer of the book of Exodus in the Old Testament knew a thing or two about packing a lot of punch in as few words as possible. When Moses recorded God’s words in Exodus 3:14, “I AM WHO I AM,” I wonder if he ever imagined the impact those few words would have to the Body of Christ.
For me personally when I find myself troubled by fear or worry, I roll God’s words over and over in my head reminding me all that God is. For instance, when the enemy plants doubt in my mind over the future, God reminds me, “I AM your future.”
When I wake in the middle of the night worried about finances, God reminds me “I AM your provision.”
For every problem I have when I can’t think of Scripture right off the top of my head, I run through the list of all the things that God is to me: “I AM your healer. I AM forgiveness. I AM mercy. I AM your joy. I AM your peace. I AM love. I AM whatever you need.”
Memorizing Scripture is important and necessary for our personal growth, but in a pinch when you can’t recall verse and chapter try mediating on ALL that our Lord is to us with these few simple words … I AM. Let the God of all comfort be ALL that you need.
Blessings in Christ,
Kathy K.
I would like to be a person of few but powerful words.
