What’s My Legacy?

One of the questions in my Bible Study homework this past week was, “How would God and others describe the main direction of your life?”  Wow.  Talk about a time for serious self-reflection.  This is a good question to ask those friends/loved ones in your life whom you know will be down-right honest with you.

So I pondered this question, mulled it over and tried to get as good of an objective response from myself as possible.  A few days passed, and I was faced with the same idea again.  My great aunt passed away recently.  She lived in Kansas and I was not able to get back for the funeral.  The other night I had a quiet moment and was able to read her obituary online as well as the guestbook comments others had written about her.

This also got me thinking…when it’s time for me to leave this life, what will others say about me…what was the main direction of my life and what will I be remembered for?  Now, I know this is not light and fluffy stuff, but I feel like God was really wanting me to take a step back and think seriously about it.

I came to one conclusion.  I thought about what Pastor Brian has said before about our church…If all of a sudden, VCNP ceased to exist, would the community miss us?  Our response as a church to this question is that we certainly hope so and that is why we are so committed to serving the poor and the surrounding community (doing what God has called the church to do).

Well, if I suddenly ceased to exist, I would hope that I would be remembered by one quality – that I loved Jesus and did the best I could to be a true follower of his and fulfill the purpose he designed me to complete.

So now, I ask myself – am I doing this?  Does what I’m saying match the way I’m living my life and my actions?  Food for thought!  And of course,  a life-long work in progress that only by the grace of God I will be able to accomplish.
