I recently had a conversation with a young Christian woman. She was beautiful in appearance, extremely intelligent and capable; however, the more we conversed, the more I realized there was a huge problem. Her life had been filled with many painful and unfair events which had left deep ugly scars within her soul producing a bitter and critical spirit. As we continued our conversation my heart was broken for this young woman because these events not only changed her but they ruled over her.
In the 16th chapter of the Gospel of John, Jesus is having a heart to heart with His disciples. He tells them life is going to be hard, you will not be able to control what happens to you. Jesus ends the chapter by saying,
“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
In the middle of this moving chapter Jesus promises us the Holy Spirit, our Comforter, our Helper will come and guide us in truth; the truth being Jesus has overcome!
I thought of the young woman I spoke of at the beginning. Jesus has overcome the painful events of her life but she continues to choose to live life in the pain. Consider this:
” The sadness you have right now is similar to that pain, but the coming joy is also similar. When I see you again, you’ll be full of joy, and it will be a joy no one can rob from you. You’ll no longer be so full of questions.”This is what I want you to do: Ask the Father for whatever is in keeping with the things I’ve revealed to you. Ask in my name, according to my will, and he’ll most certainly give it to you. Your joy will be a river overflowing its banks!” John 16:21-24 The Message
Every day we make a choice how we will live life. Will we chose a life destroyed by the pain of our past, the problems of our present or the fear of our future. OR will we chose to live life filled with forgiveness, surrender, love and hope allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us into truth.
