Hope in the Hard Places

We all have tough days. We all walk through hard places in life. The question is what do you do when you’re heart and soul are in pain? Do you hide? Do get in ‘fix-it’ mode? Do you fantasize about revenge? Do you complain and complain to anyone who will listen? Do you burn with anger? Are you consumed with fear?  Do you find yourself sinking into that deep dark place? I can honestly say I have done all of these!

In Psalms 143 David experienced that deep darkness of the soul and expresses his heart in versus 3-4 by saying:

“For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; He hath smitten my life down to the ground: He hath made me to dwell in dark places, as those that have been long dead. Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; My heart within me is desolate.”

Let’s look at three insights David shares on how to deal with pain when in a hard place found in Psalms 143.

  1. Remember what God has done! Remember His faithfulness. Tell your story!! Remember where God has lead you, helped you,  delivered you from the hard places in the past.  Let faith arise!!!

“I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that you have done; I ponder the work of your hands.” Psalms‬ ‭143:5‬

2.  Seek God! Often when we’re hurting we want to run from our pain, we doubt His love or even blame God. We may self-medicate by eating, entertainment, keeping busy, but running from our pain does not solve the problem. When we run to God that is where we find our salvation and healing. Let hope arise!!!

“I spread forth my hands unto thee: My soul thirsteth after thee, as a weary land.” Psalms‬ ‭143:6‬ ‭ASV‬‬

3.  Keep your focus on the big picture   Remember God is at work within your life and God is committed to completing that work. Let His love fill you!!

“And in your steadfast love you will cut off my enemies, and you will destroy all the adversaries of my soul, for I am your servant.” Psalms 143:12

‭‭The truth is how God works out his plan is often mysterious and complicated. We have our expectations of God but he is not bound by our understanding. (Proverbs 3:4-5) God is at works to accomplish his goals in ours lives in ways that are best for us!  God’s mercy and the tenacity of his love is more than we can imagine or think.
