I’VE GOT A SECRET!

“A gossip goes around telling secrets, but those who are trustworthy can keep a confidence.” Proverbs 11:13 (NLT)

Keeping a secret can be a pretty tall order for many of us. Most of the time I do pretty well in this department but I’m not perfect. If I do divulge a closely-guarded secret, it’s usually only my husband I’ll take into my confidence.

My secret-keeping skills were sorely tested in the last three months as two of my three children got engaged to be married; one as recently as a few days ago. With both engagements I was blessed to be part of the ring shopping experience thereby requiring sworn secrecy so as not to tip off the future brides-to-be.

Not only did the proposals need to be kept secret for weeks prior to the actual engagements, but I was required to be an award-winning actress each time I saw or spoke with these young women so as not to give away the secret. I’m not that great of an actress, but somehow I managed to remain completely mum about the well-thought out proposals. Normally my face hides nothing so I’m surprised my immense joy for these proposals didn’t give me away. For me to pull off these two life-changing secrets so masterfully was a Herculean effort on my part! Both brides-to-be were wonderfully surprised and the proposals went splendidly!

With so much secret keeping lately, it got me wondering whether I was a getting a little too good at keeping secrets. I began to question whether my life reflects Jesus or am I keeping my salvation a closely guarded secret? Does my face, my demeanor or my words reflect my faith or are people around me clueless and surprised to learn that I love Jesus and Jesus loves me?

Christ commanded in Mark 16:15 to “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.

The shootings at the college in Oregon last week made me question my commitment to my faith. If asked point blank under threat of gunfire and/or death, would I openly admit “Yes, I am a Christian” or would I hide in fear and keep my faith a secret?

While most of us will never be put in the position of defending our faith at gunpoint, many of us have opportunities every day to share the love of Christ or share our faith. How are we doing? Do we openly share … or are we keeping our faith a closely guarded secret?

Because my face hides nothing and I’m not that good of an actress I’d like to believe that the joy of the Lord and my love for Jesus radiates off my face the same way my joy for upcoming proposals does. I sincerely hope I’m radiating because honestly … some secrets are simply too good not to share.

Blessings in Christ,
Kathy K.
