Daily Examen

St. Ignatius created something he called the “Daily Examen” many years ago, to create a “cleansing, thanking, and evaluating” time for each day.  It is a set of simple questions to help us see the Spirit’s work in the day we just completed and turn our hearts also to the next day with hope, repentance, trust and joy.

I often use variations of this prayer model.  I’m writing one today in case someone else may want to try it.  Just take your time and get quiet before the Lord.

  1. Become aware of the presence of God.  In this moment, become present to Jesus.  Quiet your heart and listen.
  2. Appreciate God’s gifts in each event of the day. See through a lens of thankfulness.
  3. Try to become aware of your emotions.  Review both positive and negative feelings. Did you choose Jesus’ way in each situation?
  4. Joy and Sorrow. Choose one aspect of your day and pray.  Ask forgiveness if it is necessary or rejoice in a success.
  5. Look toward tomorrow. Ask God to shine light on tomorrow’s happenings.  Move toward expectation.  Resolve to grow.

It is good to consistently reorient our hearts toward God’s desires for us.

Blessings,

Thora
