God of Surprises

Recently I was reading my bible. It seems even after 13 years of studying and reading the bible I can still be surprised- that’s one of my favorite things about the bible (other than it’s life changing cosmic words of course).

I’m the kinda girl that love’s surprises. Suspense gives me anxiety so surprises remedy that pretty well. What’s funny is I’m always secretly hoping that when I read scripture something I’ve read a million times will suddenly take on a whole new light and surprise me. So when it actually happens I feel like asking everyone if they’ve ever noticed what I suddenly see. Of course half the time I’m the only one who never knew but there’s the other times when I can have some really interesting conversations.

All that to say: Have you ever noticed in Genesis 1 (the account of creation) the sun and moon were not created until the fourth day?

16 God made two great lights—the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set these lights in the sky to light the earth, 18 to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.

19 And evening passed and morning came, marking the fourth day.

Isn’t that fascinating? When God said, “Let there be light” in Genesis 1:3 it was not the sun that lit the sky. At least that’s how I interpreted it. What lit the sky? The suspense is killing me!

I have this little file in my brain it’s marked “Things I’ll ask God when I get to heaven”. This is definitely getting filed there. I picture me and God walking together in heaven and me being like “So… let there be light…?”

It’s exciting to think of God as a God of surprises… well maybe not if you don’t like surprises… for me it is at least. Ha ha.

  1. That’s cool! I hadn’t thought about that before. But as I read your blog it made me think of Revelation 21:22-24 and Rev 22:5. In the new Jerusalem the light of the sun or of a lamp won’t be needed and there will be no more night. The verses say the glory of God will give the new Jerusalem its light and the Lamb will be its lamp.

    Thanks for your blog!

  2. It’s so great!!!God’s desire for us is that we never be in darkness!
And in heaven I hope that there’s a media room – with ALL the epic stories
The ones I’ve read over and over! Only with the Real characters and the ACTUAL EVERYTHING
