Seasons of Loss

It was a Monday morning and we were on our way to the veterinarian’s office with our sweet girl Gucci. She had been such a joy to us with her spunky, bossy way mixed with her adorable walk like a chubby toddler as she followed us around. She was sick and it was hard saying goodbye. That week was filled with many more losses, a perfect storm the kind only Jesus can calm.

“There are many sorts of broken hearts, and Christ is good at healing them all.” – Charles Spurgeon

As I am sitting outside writing this blog I was reminded of the song ‘Bless the Broken Road’ by Rascals Flats.  I changed it to make it a prayer to God.

“I couldn’t see how every sign pointed straight to you Jesus

That every long lost dream lead me to where you are and your purpose for me.

Others who broke my heart, they were like northern stars

Pointing me on my way into your loving arms my precious Father

This much I know is true

That God you blessed my broken road

That led me straight to you”

God uses the broken place of of our lives to guide us to Himself. In times of greatest loss, times of deepest heartbreak, times of pain and trails when we are most fragile that is when the presence of God and His voice are the sweetest because “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Ps. 34:18

In seasons of loss wether of death, divorce, illness, career, friendship, empty nest or a sweet little puppy dog named Gucci; It’s important to take time to cry, say goodbye to dreams, rest, practice self-care, exercise and eat well and hold on to hope.  In those moments of pain it’s easy to build walls, become resentful and give up but all of this makes the tender heart hard.  Trust God in the losses and worship! Worship gives you perspective and reminds you of God’s great love and faithfulness.

I often remind myself life is messy but God is in the mess. Paraphrasing and taking some liberties with Deuteronomy 31:6 I encourage you “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear the pain or be in dread of the loss, for it is the Lord your God our faithful Jesus who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

From my heart to yours,

  1. Da Netta, Thank you for the reminder to STOP, to lament, & feel the feelings under every area of grief, loss and transition, vs. burying the feelings alive without processing them. I have and I am learning “Feelings Buried alive Never Die.”
May Our Great and ALL Mighty God walk closely and tenderly with you, and comfort you in your time of mourning for Gucci – your beloved companion…

  2. DaNetta, your words are so timely. So sorry about your little Gucci – been in that position many times myself and it’s always difficult. I love the way you re-worded the song – how perfect! May God hear and answer your prayer as you heal from this and your other losses.
