When Life is Unfair

Can you think of a situation or experience in your life that felt like an exception to the promises written in the bible? As Christians, we wait expectantly for God’s kingdom to breakthrough and for his goodness and promises to come to fruition in our lives. Our faith, however, doesn’t make us immune to life’s hardships or tribulations.

We have all been in situations or experienced circumstances that were wrong and unfair. We struggle to reconcile our feelings, especially if something bad happened and God didn’t intervene. We try to reason through and understand, but all we can do is ask “Why God? Why?” Doubt sets in and we begin to question God’s love for us and whether or not he’ll work things out for our good.

That is the moment when we must look past our circumstances and feelings of doubt, and focus on what we know to be true about God and what is written in His word. Deuteronomy 32:4 says this about God, “He is the Rock. His works are perfect. All his ways are right. He is faithful. He doesn’t do anything wrong. He is honest and fair.”

Isaiah 55:8-9 says, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.”

Although we may not comprehend why, there is a purpose for the trials we face and God will surely make use of them. John 10:10 reminds us, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” Some circumstances may prevail, causing the path we take in life to change, but the good plan God has for our lives will never change.

  1. This makes me think of a phase I have used mentally over the years, “Life is hard, but God is good.”

  2. Thanks for your encouragement through the Bible verses and words of wisdom. God cares about us more than we can possibly realize. Recently I found a YouTube music video of Lincoln Brewster song “While I Wait” and it talks about trusting God in the difficulties of life. Even when I don’t understand, I can still trust.

  3. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4. I’m thankful God walks us through the dark valleys and we don’t have to stay there.
