Living in the Moment

Living in the moment is a discipline I am working on. To live in the moment in my body, soul, mind and spirit. It’s challenging but it is possible. It is believing in the truth Jesus spoke on the cross in John 19:30, “It is finished”.

The bible was translated into English from the Hebrew and Greek languages. The English language tends to use one word to describe many ideas. For example, we love hamburgers, we love football, we love hiking, we love our husband and we love our children. Now we know that we love our husband and kids more than hamburgers but we use the same word. The Greek language uses more than one word to describe ideas, concepts and things.

Case in point, the Greek terms for time are chronos and kairos, but each are translated into English as the word time. But there is a difference in these two Greek words. Chronos has the idea of continuous time, the past, present and future. We get our English word chronological from it. The second term for time in the Greek is kairos which describes a present moment in time. Kairos is not measured by quantity but by quality. A great way to understand the word kairos is by the quote from George Carlin, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”

Jesus in Mark 1:14-15 says, “Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

When Jesus says, “The time is fulfilled,” He is using the Greek word kairos. Jesus is not thinking about the movement of time rather Jesus is speaking in terms of the now, in the moment.

Christ is exalted in our body, Phil. 1:20; Christ is the guardian of our soul, 1Peter 2:25; Christ is transforming our mind, Romans 12:2; and the same spirit that raised Christ is in us, Romans 8:11.

Living in the moment requires a shift of our thinking and that takes time and discipline. As we live our lives in the moment we are living in kairos in the fulfillment of Christ’s finished work. We are living in hope! Our body, soul, mind and spirit are living in Jesus right now. It is freedom from fear, from regret, from helplessness.
