“I do nothing for God!” my friend complained to me the other day.
Her comment made me sad because I realized how little value she ascribed to her ministry as a wife, busy mother of five little ones and small group hostess.
“What do you mean “nothing”? I asked, ready to set the record straight.
“I mean, I’ve got so much going on at home, I can’t sign up to help with anything at church.”
My dear friend, like so many of us at some point, had believed that unless she was volunteering in some capacity at the local church, she wasn’t serving the Lord.
This is truly a misconception. Our church does need our involvement, how else could ministry get done? However, our place of service extends beyond the four walls of a congregation – it includes our home, workplace, gym and any other location where we meet with other people.
I heard about this young woman who had been bed-ridden for many years. She had a heart for missions but, obviously, going to other countries wasn’t an option. So she prayed earnestly for missionaries everywhere. Prayer became her ministry and her bed her place of service.
God has called all of his children to serve him in different ways and in different places. Our passion usually defines the way we serve, but it is up to us to recognize our places of service and take advantage of the opportunities He gives us to share his love and message with others – right where we’re at!
What is one of the places God has called you to serve him at, other than your local church? We would love to hear about it, so would you take a minute to share that with this community of bloggers?
